The upper part of the tray should contain a mixture of 1/3 horticulture perlite of coarse grade, 1/3 potting soil, and 1/3 of large horticulture vermiculite.

When all this is set, it is necessary to place this container in the grow bed, with water level being a bit lower than the mixture of soils. Such arrangement will ensure the higher efficacy of the organic hydroponic gardening.

Lava rock with the secondary roots of the plants will be submerged in the water, and it will also serve to make this water flow up and moisten the soil mixture. At the same time, the upper layer of medium will be free to absorb the nutrients added directly to the primary roots.

Such hydroponic system saves a gardener from constant controlling and maintaining of the pH level and ppm of the growing medium. Nevertheless, beware of adding too many liquid nutrients to the soil layer: they may leak into the lava rock layer and disarrange your organic hydroponics gardening.

How to de-bug your garden

Some herbs grow at a dangerously fast rate. Be very careful if you plan to grow mint plants. Mint plants will take over an area very quickly, and before you know it, the mint plants have occupied your whole herb garden area.

The best way to prevent this problem is to plant the more aggressive plants in pots, but make sure you get the pots with holes in the bottom to allow drainage.

When it comes time to harvest the herbs you have labored so hard over, it can be fatal to your plant to take off too much. If your plant isn’t well established, it isn’t healthy to take any leaves at all, even if it looks like it’s not using them. You should wait until your plant has been well established for at least several months before taking off any leaves. This wait will definitely be worth it, because by growing unabated your plant will produce healthily for years to come.

Once you’ve harvested your delicious home grown herbs, you’ll want to use them in cooking. Why else would you have grown them? Well first the process begins with drying them out. This is easily achieved by placing them on a cookie sheet and baking them at 170 degrees Fahrenheit for 2 to 4 hours. After they’re sufficiently dried to be used in cooking, you can consult the nearest cookbook for instructions on using them to effectively flavor a dish.

If you want to store your herbs for later usage, you should keep them in a plastic or glass container. Paper or cardboard will not work, because it will absorb the taste of the herbs. During the first few days of storage, you should regularly check the container and see if any moisture has accumulated. If it has, you must remove all the herbs and re-dry them. If moisture is left from the first drying process, it will encourage mildew while you store your herbs. Nobody likes mildew.

There is nothing like fresh herbs and especially, if you are the one that grew the herbs. So if you enjoy herbs or gardening, or both, then you should probably consider setting up an herb garden. Here are some tips for you this July for what you can be getting on with in the garden!

Easy and colourful pots and planters!  

Dust off those patio containers and add some colour to your garden this summer.  Now is the time for planting up some lovely bedding plants for containers and baskets and it couldn’t be simpler. 

Create a nice Mediterranean feel by mixing some trailing ivy with geraniums to give a colourful and easy to look after container or hanging basket.  Geraniums are great plants for those people who might not necessarily be green-fingered.  They’re easy to look after and give an abundance of colour, without too much effort.   

Give them a good watering before you plant them in their containers and then water as required and deadhead the old stems to encourage more flowers.  Plant around three or so of the same type for a generous display.

They will also benefit from a feed every two weeks.

Vegetable crops to sow

Through June and July you can sow lots of vegetables directly outside.  Why not have a go at growing your own salad leaves this summer and add a few radishes and French beans too for good measure.  Just think how you can impress your friends when you tell them that what they’re eating is home-grown!

Weeding

Oh yes, the dreaded “w” word!  Keep fighting the battle against the weeds by removing any flowering stems before they have a chance to drop their seeds.   Lots of weeds can just be teased out by hand, but use a hoe or dig out any weeds that have larger roots…..little and often is the solution to staying on top of this.

Mulch

Mulch is a great way of providing a good feed and protection to both new and established plants.  It can also look good and can even cut down on the weeding (hurrah!)  Before laying down mulch, such as composted bark chipping or cocoa shells, ensure that the ground has been given a good water first.

Trim your clematis

Early-flowering species clematis (such as Clematis montana, C. macropetala and C. alpina) can be trimmed if they have become a bit overgrown, but only after flowering.

These plants flower from the growth that’s been produced the previous year and don’t generally require pruning unless it’s needed, so don’t get too carried away.  Just a light pruning is enough to remove the spent flowers immediately after flowering.

The use of organic plant nutrients instead of the man-made chemicals in the hydroponic garden eases the work of a gardener. The matter is that the absence of synthetic chemicals eliminates the problem of ppm amount and pH balance of the water. If there is no need to calibrate nutrients, to check pH level of the water, and calculate fertilizer’s amount, a beginner of the hydroponic gardening will definitely make no mistakes, which means many problems may never occur.

A dual root growing system is made by special composition of the medium in the container: the upper part of the medium is soil or soil substitute, and organic nutrients can be supplied directly to this upper part; the lower half of the medium is some porous material, which retains water, but to which no nutrients are supplied. 

Creating an organic hydroponics system, a gardener may use a standard hydroponic grow container, though a coir fiber container will suit too. The preferred material to put at the bottom of the box is lava rock, which perfectly keeps water. Lava rock is then covered with a thin layer of loose rockwool or coir fiber to divide both medium layers and prevent them from mixing together. The upper half of the container should be filled with a mixture of 1/3 potting soil, 1/3 coarse grade horticulture perlite, and 1/3 large-sized horticulture vermiculite. Such arrangement ensures the upper capillary action of water and protects the bottom of the grow bed from the occasional mixing with any organic particles. 

Using a standard plastic hydroponic grow container one should place a plastic screen lining inside the grow bed, fitting it well at the bottom and on the walls of the container up to their top, also with the aim to protect the water from the small particles in the medium mixture. It is also possible to use a hydroponic container with tiny holes.

One more good choice for the use of organic gardening methods in hydroponics system is coir fiber containers. The filling is the same as described above with the thin layer of loose or strand coir fiber between the two types of medium. 

Such box is then set in the grow bed. Note that the level of the pumped water should be a bit lower than the soil mixture. The secondary root system will be submerged into the water along with lava rock and promote the capillary water flow up into the soil. The lower half of the medium may be watered on a regular hydroponic basis, while the upper one can be moistened just once a day. 

This system allows a gardener to supply nutrients right to the upper part of the medium, where they are vitally important. At the same time, the whole medium structure will be perfectly moistened by the pumped water and the plants will also have constant supply of oxygen and CO2, drawn into their root systems. Finally, proper amount of CO2 will improve the absorption of nutrients by the upper parts of the roots.
